Map of Ernakulam

Ernakulam is one of the most developed districts in Kerala which is located between Latitude  9o57’ N and Longitude 76 o15’ E. The district was formed on April 1st 1958. It has an area of about 2407 sq km. The headquarters of the district is at Kakkanad. Ernakulam is formed by two princely states of Travancore and the Kochi kingdom. The present Ernakulam district include Pravur, Aluva, Kochi, Kanayannor, Muvattupuzha, Kunnathunadu, Kothamangalam Taluks which come under Fort Kochi and Muvattupuzha revenue sub division. The district is bordered by Arabian Sea in the west, Trissur district in the North, Idukki district in the East and Alappuzha district in the South.

The district includes an important seaport, Kochi. It is popularly referred to as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. The tourist places and pilgrim centres here completes its uniqueness. It is also known as the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala. There are a lot of tourist destinations in Kochi including Beaches, Backwaters, Tea Plantations, Wild Life, Water Falls, Hill Stations, and Museums. Both the Children and elders enjoy a lot with the facilities available here.

The prime attractions of Kochi include:

Mattanchery Palace : This is the Dutch palace which was beautifully built by the Portuguese. Today, it is a portrait gallery of the Cochin Rajas.

Bolghatty Island: A Scenic island near the city of Ernakulam. It is famous for the Bolghatty Palace built by the Dutch in 1744 AD.

The Hill Palace Museum: This museum displays the erstwhile wealth and prosperity of the royal family of Cochin, including the King`s throne and crown.

Jewish Synagogue: This is the oldest synagogue in India. It was built in 1586 AD by the prosperous Jewish community whose links with Kerala began in Kodungalloor in Northern Kerala.

Chottanikkara Temple: It is located near Ernakulam. This temple enshrines Bhagawati – the mother Goddess, one of the most popular deities in Kerala.

There are several other tourist places like Cheeyappara Waterfalls, Santa Cruz Basillica Chruch, Pazhur, Mulamkuzhi, Wellington Island, Malayattur, Kerala History Museum etc.
