Map of Kannur

Kannur is located in the South western coast of India and it lies between latitudes 11040′ to 12048′ North and longitudes 74052′ to 76007′ East. Western Ghats in the East, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, in the South, Kasaragod in the North and Lakshadweep Sea in the West is acting as the boundary of the district. The district has an area of about 2966 square kilometres. The head quarters of the district are located at the Kannur town itself. The 3 Taluks are Kannur, Thalassery and Thalipparamba.

Kannur is a small beautiful city which is called as the land of looms and lores. We can see a lot of loom industries here and there all over the place. The peoples of Kannur were very fond of celebrating various festivals according to their traditions. The district is famous for a kind of ritual dance known as Theyyam which is very popular in the Northern Kerala. In Kannur we can find a lot of temples where this particular dance is performed.

Kannur is a very developing tourist centre in Kerala. The district offers a different experience for the spectators. In the case traditional art and culture, comparing with the other places, Kannur has got high preference. Kerala folklore academy was started at Kannur. Since the district has favourable climatic conditions it is also very rich in vegetation.

Tourist Destinations

Arakkal Palace: It is the only Muslim royal family in Kerala. The palace is considered as the residence of Arackal Ali Rajas.

Gundert Bungalow: This is located at Illikkunnu which is nearby Thalassery. This was the residence place of Dr. Herman Gundert, who was a German scholar. He compiled the first Malayalam dictionary and also built a church on Nettur Hill in 1889.

Payyabalam Beach: This is situated on the Kerala-Karnataka border which is ideal place for trekking.

Paithalmala: This is situated on the Kerala-Karnataka border which is ideal place for trekking

Ezhimala: The location is provided with a sea shore which is bordered by beautiful hills which is really a fascinating sight. The hills are famous for plenty of rare medicinal herbs.
