Map of Kollam

Kollam is one of the districts in Kerala which is named as Quilon in earlier days. It has an area of about 2,498 square kilometeres, which is located on the South West coast of Kerala between the latitudes 9° 28′ N to 8° 45′  and logitudes 76° 28′ to 77° 17′ N. The district is bounded by Alappuzha on the North, Pathanamthitta on the North East, thirunelveli district of Tamilnadu on the East, Trivandrum on the south and Arabian Sea on the west. The district consists of 5 Taluks namely, Karunagappally, Kollam, Kottarakkara, Kunnathoor and Pathanapuram.

We can see large area of green fields at different places at Kollam. The tropical crop of the district includes both food crop and cash crop. Kollam is gifted with unique features such as the sea, lakes, plains, mountains,streams, rivers, backwaters and forests. The main backwater destinations are Ashtamudi Lake, Munroe Island, Alumkadavu, Paravura. Kallada and Ithikkara are those rivers which are flowing through the district. The only major fresh water lake of Kerala is the Sasthamcotta Lake and this is flowing through the Kollam district. May be these all are the reasons to call Kollam as the ‘Gods own Capital’.

Kolam is famous for Wildlife Sancturies, Pilgrimage Centres and Festivals. The Wildlife Sancturies of Kollam must be very much enjoyable to all nature lovers. The district has a large area under forest. Amritapuri in Vallickavu is one of the major pilgrimage centres of Kollam. This place is famous in the history for the birthplace of Matha Amrithananthamayi. Mayyanad is another pilgrim centre at Kollam whic is famous for shrines and temples. Anchencoil, Anchal, Aryankavu,Chavara, Karunagapally, Kottarakkara, Neendakara, Sakthikulangara are all beautiful tourist destinations which came under the Kollam district of which Neendakara and Sakthikulangara are famous for fisheries. The first Eco-tourism project in India is at Thenmala which is located 66 kms East of Kollam.
