Map of Malappuram

Malappuram district is formed on 16 Jun 1969. It is covered by an area of about 3,550 square kilometres. In the East, it is surrounded by Nilgiri Mountains and in the west it is bounded by Arabian Sea. It lies on the latitude 11.03°N and the longitude 76.05°E. The district is divided into 6 taluks, namely, Eranad, Nilambur Perinthalmanna, Ponnani, Tirur and Tirurangadi. The headquarters of the district is at Malappuram.

In Malappuram a large area is covered with rivers, beaches, waterfalls, backwater destinations, hills, valleys and plantations. Due to these reasons Malappuram is really a fantastic place for picnic. In addition to that there is also a famous bird sanctuary in the district. The natural beauty of Malappuram will make us feel to take to another world.

Tourist Destinations

Padinharekara Beach: It is a nearby place of Ponnani. It offers a fascinating view of the confluence of the rivers Bharathapuzha and Tirur puzha with the Arabian Sea.

Kondotty Nercha: It is celebrated at the Kondotty Mosque, in the week of the long festival.

Thirunavaya Temple: The temple has a great historical importance. It is located on the banks of Bharatpuzha.

Pazhayangadi Mosque: This is a famous pilgrim centre of the Muslims which is situated at Manjeri on the way to Malappuram.

Angadippuram: It has the Thirumandhankunnu which is dedicated to Goddess Durga as well as the Puthanangadi Mosque. So it is an important pilgrim centre for both Hindus and Muslims. This has Arabic inscriptions on its walls.

Nilambur: This is mostly populated with Cholainaickans, which are the oldest aboriginal tribe of Kerala.

Tanur Beach: This was a small coastal fishing town at Tanur at the time of Portugese.

Tirur: The place is called Thunchan Parambu since it is the birth place of Thunchath Ezhuthachan.

Vallikunnu Beach: The beach is surrounded by mangroves and coconut groves. A beautiful beach resort which is situated here is the main attraction of this place.
