Pathanamthitta district is formed on 1 Nov 1982. It is spreaded over an area of about 2,462 square kilometres. The districts lies on the latitudes 9.27°N and longitudes 76.78°E. Pathanamthitta is divided into 5 taluks named as Adoor, Kozhencherry, Mallappally, Ranni and Thiruvalla. Pathanamthitta town is the place where district headquarters is located. Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kollam are the districts which are bordering Pathanamthitta. There are several major cities and towns in the district such as Pathanamthitta, Tiruvalla, Adoor, Kozhencherry, Ranni, Konni.

Pathanamthitta is famous for pilgrim centres and so it is also known as headquarters of pilgrimage tourism. The whole district is a small city which is filled with natural beauty and fairs. No one wants to miss a wonderful chance to view the charming nature.

Tourist Attractions

Sabarimala Sree Dharmasastha Temple: This temple is a famous pilgrim centre in India which is located on the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats and the speciality of this place is that it can be accessible only by foot, from Pamba.

Aranmula: It is located on the banks of the holy River Pamba, where the Parthasarathi Temple is visited by a large crowd of devotees every day.

Mannadi: It is the folk Art Centre where Veluthampi Dalawa spent his last days.

Omallur: Here located a famous cattle fair centre which is the main attraction of Omallur.

Perumthenaruvi: This is situated on the banks of the River Pamba where there is a famous waterfall. It is a favourite picnic spot in the district.

Charalkunnu Hill station: This is one of major attraction of this place where there is a picturesque hill station. The hill station offers a wonderful view of the nearby valleys.

Vijana Kala Vedi Cultural Centre: It is a famous cultural centre, which was discovered by a French scholar, Louba Schild with the support of UNESCO.
