Map of Thrissur

Thrissur which is a revenue district of Kerala was formed on July 1, 1949. The district is covered by an area of about 3,032 square kilometres. It lies on the latitude 10.52°N and longitude 76.21°E. The district is divided into 5 taluks such as Chavakkad, Kodungallur, Mukundapuram, Thalapilly and Thrissur. The district is walled by the Palakkad district on the north and on the east, it is bordered by Palakkad district and Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, on the south it is covered by Ernakulam district, and on the west by the Arabian Sea. Thrissur is famous for ancient temples, churches, mosques and it also well known for Poorams, which means festivals. So it is also known as the cultural capital of Kerala.

Tourist Attractions

Thrissur Festival: This is the most spectacular festival celebrated in Vadakkumnathan Temple. Till late night, there will be fireworks.

Athirapally and Vazhachal Waterfalls: These waterfalls are one of the best mind blowing waterfalls in Kerala. This is located to the East of Chalakkudy which is a nearby place of Thrissur. This is some motre nearer to the Sholayar forest ranges.

Art Museum: This is a famous museum, with a good collection of woodcarvings metal sculptures, Kathakali figures and ancient jewellery is situated at the Thrissur town itself. The museum is unique with amazing figures, excellent paintings and traditional Kerala lamps.

Zoo: For animal enthusiasts, they can spend a lot of their time at the Zoo, because it has a wide variety collection of bears, birds, snakes and deer. The zoo is located in the town itself.

Peechi Dam: This is a beautiful picnic spot as well as a well known irrigation project. Boating services are available here for the tourists.

Cheruthuruthy: This place is famous for traditional Kathakali Centre. They are also providing training in in music, drama and other dance forms including Koodiyattam, Mohiniyattam and Ottam Thullal.

The Art Gallery at town hall, Elephant Shelter at Anakkayam Lake, Guruvayoor are several other tourist destinations.
